- Notes:
- This map purports to show the support for Prohibition in New York State in 1897. However, the message is lost because of the nature and extent of the detail in both the text and the map. According to the article, "Two Hundred and Sixty-Four Townships Voted Down Each and Every Excise Proposition at Town Meetings Since the Raines Law Went into Effect," and Including those voting down "All but the Drug Stores," there are allegedly "Two Hundred and Ninety-Seven Prohibition Towns." "Twenty-Six Counties . . . Would Be Absolutely Dry if the Raines Law Provided Local Option by Counties - Enough Temperance Sentiment to Drive the Entire Rum Power into the Deep Sea."
What the text makes less clear is that the 297 alleged "Prohibition Towns" amount to less than a third of New York's 900 townships; the 26 counties that "Would be Absolutely Dry" amount to less than half of the state's 60 counties; and that "No vote was taken" in New York county, "as the entire county consists of a city"! In the map itself, the "Totally Dry" white towns are overwhelmed by those that voted to retain liquor sales in at least one form. For the use of prohibition maps of this type generally, see Schulten 2021.
