- Notes:
- An Italian allegorical map of marriage, based on the 18th century work of French nobleman, author and politician, Eustache le Noble, baron de Saint-Georges et de Tenneliere. The place names on the map focus primarily on the pitfalls of romance and marriage, including Gelosi, Bigamia, Divorcio, the port of Bad Advice (Malconsiglio), the peninsula of the Ill-Matched (Male-Appajati), Lake Itch (Prurito), the village of Little Money (Poco Soldo), and the Mountain of Relatives (Montagne di Parenti).
"Le Noble's Island of Matrimony offers a sobering and down-to-earth view of conjugal life, ruefully pessimistic perhaps because of having been so deeply clouded and coloured by the realities of his own amatory experiences." He "led a life of considerable adventure and dissipation" and did much of his writing "from the confines of at least four French prisons where he was incarcerated on a variety of charges, including forgery & adultery." Barron 2016c. Le Noble had described the Island of Marriage in French- and German-language works beginning in 1705, but it was first delineated by a map in a 1765 Italian translation. Editions and revised versions of the map continued to appear well into the 19th century, not only in Italian publications (like this one), but in England. Reitinger 1999, 117-19; Barron 2016c.
The collection includes a number of related maps; see Subject > Romance/Love/Marriage. Early allegorical maps of this kind were "more than oddities or simple curiosities," more than simply "reflections of contemporary views" they were "exemplary tools in the articulation of new attitudes, exposing controversial states of social awareness." Reitinger 1999, 106. See also Delaney 2012, 207-215.
Ocean voyages have often been used in allegorical mapping. See Subjects > Allegorical.
