- Composite, or 2 photos. Top photo has sign reading Emma Lazarus Women's Society. Accompanying page in Yiddish has handwritten note, saying, "Guests at the Andrésy Children's Home". The typed note says: "Above: Right-- Leah Nelson from the New York District of the Emma Lazarus Women's Division. Left-- Leah Nelson's sister."In the picture we see: from left to right: A. Rayski (General Secretary of the Union des juifs pour la résistance et l'entraide, France), Rubin Saltzman (General Secretary of the People's Fraternal Order, US), the famous painter Marc Chagall, Chief Editor of the Morgn Freiheit (Frayhayt) P. Novick, and S. Farber, General Secretary of the Central Children's Commission." Rubin Saltzman and Paul Novick were in France the summer of 1946. The orphanage is Le Manoir de Denouval à Andrésy, Yvelines, Île-de-France, France. It was run by the Commission Centrale de L’Enfance, Siége Sociale, Rue 21 Francois-Debergue, Montreuil-s-Bois, France, adresser le courrier: 14 Rue de Paradis, Paris 10.

- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
