Fraternal Orders- Lodges, Activities - Description:
- 5 pages. Heavily redacted text refers to the stock market crash and the Great Depression: "Before 1929, the alchemists of our social order claimed to have found the mystic touchstone of our social order." (2) "Then it started to rain. To be more exact in 1929 it started pouring....The banks had closed their doors. From then on, no one dared any more to claim that every worker had it within his power to protect himself" (4) [written before Operation Barbarossa]. Presumably written by Herbert Benjamin, then IWO Executive Secretary and author of “Our Plan for Plenty.”
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
