- Yiddish Speakers Guides (booklets) with songs, plays, activities for a Purim evening event. Translated Summary: The cover conveys the holiday message through a graphic featuring a wooden Purim Grogger. While undated, this explicitly is sent out before the holiday and mentions the DP (displaced person) camps, and a responsibility to help Jews rebuild in Europe. It explicitly calls for a new minhag (custom) to send shalach manos (Purim gifts) to sisters and brothers in Europe. One recommended activity is to read depictions of Purim in Bella Chagall's memoir Burning Lights. Reading Hayuim (Chaim) Schaus and Sholem Aleichem is also recommended. Though most such speakers guides appear to have been first prepared in 1944 (late '43 for Chanukah), this one seems to be from 1947. It is the fourth in a series on Jewish holidays. The other holiday Speakers Guides are for Chanukah, Labor Day, and Fall Holidays. Cover shows Purim grogger and the guide contains music.
- Notes:
- The Jewish People’s Fraternal Order was the largest ‘national’ section of the International Workers Order (IWO) which focused on cultural awareness and celebration, mutual support especially in health insurance coverage, and anti-fascist activities. The IWO also gave particular emphasis to supporting the rights and interests of African Americans. Documents include language and representations which comprise the historical record and should not be interpreted to mean that Cornell University or its staff endorse or approve of negative representations or stereotypes presented.
