Architecture--Sri Lanka - Image View Description:
- Photograph of the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka, with Kandy Lake in the foreground. Several building structures can be seen behind the lake, with one building resting on a stone foundation in the water.
- Description:
- The city of Kandy was the final seat of government of the Sri Lankan kings prior to British conquest in 1815. This contemporary view, of the historic sacred and royal complex, includes the Dalada Maligawa ("Temple of the Tooth"), where the tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined. Kandy Lake (1807), one of the last building projects of the Sri Lankan kings, appears in the foreground. The city of Kandy, a United Nations World Heritage site, is an important place of Buddhist pilgrimage.
