- Description:
- This is a cast of a figure from the Temple of Athena Nike parapet showing a Nike setting up a trophy or offering some symbol of victory to Athena, who is reconstructed sitting to the viewer's left of this figure. The Nike parapet was a low wall along three sides of the bastion on the Athenian Acropolis on which this small Ionic temple was built. It was sculpted in relief with a frieze showing Nikes doing such things as erecting trophies and leading animals to sacrifice in the presence of Athena, who also appears on the frieze three times. The frieze is in a fragmentary state. Here, a Nike stands in profile facing left with her large, ratracted wing at her back. The Nike's right arm is extended in front of her. Her left leg is bent at the knee with her calf resting back and she places her weight on her right leg. Her drapery is intricate, highly clingy, and translucent. The goddess' head is missing in the original, as are her left arm, much of her right arm, and her feet. The fragment has been incorporated into a blank background in order to make this cast a regular, rectangular shape.
