- Description:
- This is a cast of a bust of an athlete or of Hermes housed in the British Museum. The youthful male figure has heavily idealized features. He looks calmly ahead with thick-lidded eyes and relatively thick lips that are slightly parted. His hair is full, short, and curly. This work was in the collection of William Chinnery before it was acquired by the British Museum in 1812 and was known popularly as the Chinnery Hermes. The ancient head is attached to a modern bust. Restorations to the tip of the nose and to parts of the right (proper) side of the head are still in place on the original and are reflected in this cast.
