- This is a cast of an archaistic herm of a flute-playing satyr housed in the British Museum. He tilts his head slightly down and to his left and looks toward the ground with thick-lidded eyes. His long, narrow nose is curved, its tip points down, and the nostrils are flared. The creature purses his lips to blow into his flute, which he holds at an angle towards his right. His hair is rendered in patterned waves and it falls in several long, curly tresses over his shoulders. His ears are pointed. A wide fillet, apparently beaded at the upper edge, sits at his hairline. His long, pointy beard is also patterned. He holds the bottom part of the flute with his bent right arm. The top of the flute is missing in this cast and a smooth plaster stump has taken the place of the left hand, which is held across the chest and fused to the flute. A sleeved chiton tied low on the waist falls in saggy folds down the squared body of the satyr and a long chlamys is tied over his shoulders. Instead of lower legs, the satyr stands on a herm base, which is supported by a molded plinth. Eighteenth c. restorations to the tip of the nose, the right arm, left hand, lower part of the flute, and the lower part of the herm are reflected in this cast.
