- Description:
- This is a cast of a marble head of Ares of the Borghese type that is housed in the Munich Glyptothek. The original, broken at the neck, has been cast as a bust here. Ares turns his head to his right and looks calmly ahead. His features are Classical, with thick-lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a long, narrow nose, slightly parted, full lips, and a full chin. His wavy hair is visible below the helmet. Locks fall at his temples and neck and sideburns extend to his jaw bones. He wears an Attic helmet that is decorated in relief with palmettes, griffins, and sphinxes. A large crest is supported by a sculpted sphinx. The chest-only bust lacks anatomical details and is supported by a molded base. Several examples of this statue type, which is named for its most famous example, the Borghese Ares in the Louvre (Ma 866), exist. It is perhaps a copy of a 5th c. BCE cult statue of Ares by Alkamenes. The exaggerated crest of the helmet is a restoration that has been removed from the original. Restorations to the tip of the nose have also been removed subsequent to the production of this cast.
