- Description:
- This is a restored cast of the marble Athena Lenormant statuette, a reduced version of Phidias' chryselephantine Athena Parthenos that was found in 1859 near the Pnyx in Athens. The goddess stands with her left leg slightly advanced. On her head is a relatively plain helmet. She wears a heavy peplos, tied at the waist and with a long kolpos, and an unembellished aegis over her shoulders. In this cast, the figure is missing much of her lowered left arm, the shield on which she rests her left hand, and the snake between her shield and leg. On the statuette's base is depicted the birth of Pandora. A lack of crispness of detail along with unworked areas of stone indicate that the original statuette was unfinished.
