- Description:
- This is a cast of a bust of the 2nd c. CE Roman emperor Antoninus Pius in the Munich Glyptothek. He turns his head to his left and looks ahead calmly with incised pupils. His curly, short hair is somewhat bushy at the sides. His beard is full but short. The emperor wears a cloak (paludamentum) that drapes in folds across his chest and is fastened at his right shoulder with a round fibula. The fringed sleeve of another garment is also visible at his right shoulder. This cast preserves restorations to the nose and drapery that are no longer present on the original. The degraded sticker on the front of the foot of the bust (940) refers to the number associated with this cast in A Visitors' Catalogue of the Museum of Classical Archaeology (Ithaca, 1893), a publication that preceded the Sage Catalogue. This bust does not appear in the Sage Catalogue, which ends at no. 521, but was a part of that collection. It is noted as Sage no. 532 on a card catalog-type index card of uncertain date.
