- Description:
- This is a cast of a portrait bust of the fifth century BCE Greek statesman Perikles that is housed in the British Museum. Perikles wears a helmet pushed back on his head. He looks ahead serenely with thick-lidded eyes and tilts his head very subtly to his left. His nose is narrow and his lips are full. His short, curly hair is visible below the helmet rim and can also be seen through the eye holes of the helmet. He has a short, well-groomed beard. The bust does not include anatomical features and is, instead, the top portion of a herm. The Greek inscription at the lower front of the bust reads "PERIKLES". The lettering is picked out in red, a feature that was likely present on the original but that is no longer extant. Restorations to the nose and minor parts of the helmet are preserved in this cast and are still in place on the original.
