- Description:
- This is a cast of the Munich Oil Pourer, a Roman copy of a statue perhaps produced by the school of Lysippos in the 4th c. BCE. In its complete form, the lean, well-muscled figure stands in contrapposto with his left leg straightened and his right leg bent. His feet are broadly parted and he appears to place weight on both feet. He held up his now-missing right arm to pour. He looks down at his left hand (missing in the original), which he holds in front of his abdomen. This record represents a separately produced section of the cast that includes the lower abdomen and legs, the base, and a low tree trunk support at the figure's left leg. The figure's left knee is damaged. A large trapezoidal attachment rises above the abdomen. Additional copies of the Oil Pourer are known, for example one in Dresden (Albertinum, no. Hm. 67), and a head in Boston (MFA no. 04.11). This cast was made with restorations in place, most notably the entire right arm and the left hand. The restorations have been removed from the original.
