- Description:
- This is a cast of the front part of a colossal marble right foot from a now-missing acrolithic statue. The original foot is housed in Berlin. The foot is cut cleanly in front of the ankle and is roughly chiseled at the back. It is raised and the toes are bent up slightly. The foot is shod in a thick-soled sandal with a protruding loop at the side. A diamond-shaped clasp joins two narrow straps at the split between the large and second toes. The clasp is decorated with a small rosette at its center. The matching left foot is in the Devonshire Collection in Chatsworth, England. Picón argues that the resting stance of this foot, when considered with the flat left foot, suggests a standing statue that must have measured 11 meters in height. The style of the sandal, he further argues, indicates that the figure represented here was female. The online Antikensammlung catalog entry indicates that the statue was seated and measured 9 meters in height.
