- Description:
- This is a cast of a figure from the Temple of Athena Nike parapet showing a Nike leaning over to adjust her sandal. The Nike parapet was a low wall along three sides of the bastion on the Athenian Acropolis on which this small Ionic temple was built. It was sculpted in relief with a frieze showing Nikes doing such things as erecting trophies and leading animals to sacrifice in the presence of Athena, who also appears on the frieze three times. The frieze is in a fragmentary state. Here, a Nike posed between profile and three-quarter views stands on her left leg with her right leg bent up. She shifts her torso and twists to reach down and loosen the strap of her right sandal. Her drapery is splendid in its detail and clings to produce the effect of translucence. Her retracted wing is visible rising above her left shoulder and arm. The figure's head, left forearm, and left foot are missing in the original, and she is battered around some edges. The new accession number could not be written on the cast at the time of cataloging because of high mounting.
