Photograph published as fig. 71 in Ousterhout, JHH ("Haynes photographed the so-called Palmyra Gate, the principle entrance to the Syrian caravan city of Dura-Europos, in 1885. Standing on the Euphrates, and only officially 'rediscovered' in 1920, Dura preserves significant remains from Late Antiquity, as it was abandoned and forgotten after the Sasanian siege of 256-57AD. This may be the first photograph of the site.")
