Bumper stickers refer to the fictitious Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Smith who was nominated to oppose the candidacy of Richard M. Nixon by delegate Terry Carpenter during the 1956 Republican Convention. The Joe Smith name was later adopted as an anti-Nixon slogan.
