- Donor Susan H. Douglas dates these items to the 1956 Presidential Campaign. The Joe Smith in the ADLAI / ESTES/ and / JOE SMITH tab was a fictitious person nominated for the 1956 Republican Party Vice-Presidential slot at the Republican National Convention. This was done in opposition to the candidacy of Richard M. Nixon
the Joe Smith name was later adopted as an anti-Nixon slogan by the Democratic Party. - Cite As:
