- Description:
- Soap figurine in the shape of a baby encased in its original sales box. Cover of box reads My Papa will Vote for / McKinley / Gold Standard, / Protection, Reciprocity / And Good Times. Card tied around neck of figurine with red ribbon bears the same inscription. Item donor Susan H. Douglas dates the soap to the 1896 Presidential campaign. Fischer (1988: 153) notes that the item bears a chilling similarity to a naked baby in a coffin, explaining perhaps why such objects were not issued in subsequent elections and that a similar item was also produced promoting William Jennings Bryan.
